Applying for a mortgage

If you are hoping to get a mortgage and you have an appointment to see a mortgage broker make sure you take everything that he or she might want to see such as:

  • Pay slips or business accounts
  • Details of your monthly income and spending e.g. council tax, utilities bills
  • Proof of your address and identity
  • Details of any loans or credit card debts.

By providing this information at this outset, it makes it easier for the adviser to provide the most suitable advice and also minimizes the risk of delays later in the process.

Don’t let anyone persuade you to overstate your income in order to get a very large loan. If you lie about your income, you could end up with a loan you can’t afford. You will also be committing a fraud and could get a criminal record.

Don’t be tempted to overstate your income. If you end up with a mortgage you can’t afford, you could lose your home.
